SCHOOL WORKSHOP


TELLING STORIES WITH TEXTILES


Primary Years 5 and 6 (The structure of this course can be tailored for either Key stage 2 or 3)


Project description

To create a story and give a visual account for each part of the story. Each child has one part of the story to create as a textile panel.

Project aims and key learning objectives

To introduce the children to textiles as an art form using historical and contemporary examples (i.e. Bayeaux Tapestry)
To work collaboratively in the development of the story
To develop their creative ideas and visual composition through the use of their sketchbooks.
To develop their practical skills in painting and develop their techniques in creating texture with fabric and exploration of colour.
To develop collaborative skills by working on the choices of materials and textures to be used throughout the work.

Materials required

Sketchbooks
Canvas, silk and felt
Acrylic paint
Fusible fabric
Glue

Project timetable
This is an outline timetable but can be altered to suit individual schools requirements

The workshop runs for just over half a term. – 2 hour session per week.

Week one
Introduction using power point presentation of textile artists including my own work.
An introduction to sketchbooks.
An introduction to fabric manipulation techniques and examples
Develop a story that resonates with their work in literacy. (group work)
End with a completed story.

Week two
To divide the story visually into one panel for each child. (group work)

Working on their own to sketch and develop a finished outline for the practical work to begin. To then transfer this onto their canvas panel approx 55x40cm

Week three - practical work – group work

Week four – practical work - group and individual

Week five - practical work - individual

Week six - practical work - individual

Week seven
Finishing off – presentation of work and each child to write about their impressions of the course and evaluate what they have learnt.

Total teaching hours – 14
Total prep hours – 6

Total cost of workshop £400 not including materials.
